Inferno

DSC09314 wmk (768x1024)” Midway upon the journey of our life
I found myself within a forest dark,
For the straightforward pathway had been lost .”
INFERNO, Canto I, lines 1-3
THE DIVINE COMEDY by Dante Alighieri
translated by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow (1867)

Inferno… some say it is an afterlife penalty, while others find that Heaven & Hell are right here and now.

We forge the chains of our Hell.

One link at a time… fratricide , blaming only foreign influence for the slaughter.

One link at a time… brutal & acquisitive but only because times suggest your death in exchange for my life.

One link at a time… envious, unjust, vindictive, since our gaze recognizes nothing but the rule of power.

[ surely there are forms of Hell that cannot be understood, like when children are deprived from their dreams of a future; these do not lie here…]

One link at a time… trying to comprehend the ineffable.
Denying the life boat of ” have faith and doubt not”. No, always searching, inquiring, changing perspectives. And when one reaches the depths that allow to behold the unsaid as such, one should accept it.

” Ask it not, Reader, for I write it not,
Because all language would be insufficient. ”
INFERNO, Canto XXXIV, lines 23 – 24

The zenith of The Thinker ( La Penseur ) exists in the transcendence of thought.
Otherwise Hell awaits, as the perpetual Sisyphus’ task of never ending dissection and analysis.

One link at a time… until the moment of truth.
The purity of which depends upon the realization, or not, of personal responsibility.

Until the moment you have internalized the knowledge of Heaven & Hell being here and now.
Only then, the chains are shattered, so that you can be Free at last…

But without our responsibility resting upon our shoulders, thus without face, how can we not but linger in our own Inferno ?

Χωρίς όμως τη ευθύνη μας στους ώμους μας, χωρίς πρόσωπο, πώς να μη βολοδέρνουμε στην δική μας κόλαση;

  2. Cool photos Nick, but really they don’t do justice to the real thing! Man, I was seriously impressed when I saw it live! It’s much bigger than I expected and then, it has so much detail I found myself staring open-mouthed not knowing where to rest my eyes! ……And when the light hits it just so ….. Wow!

    • Thanks mate!
To manage to make you lost for words is an achievement by itself 🙂
I cannot emphasize enough the fulfillment I find in the appeal my art has to each and every one of you.
Take care man & may the seas you dive be always calm and blue.

  5. Hi Nick, so glad you directed me here following our impromptu thoughts on Project #4!

One link at a time, ay?

How can we come to any terms with our notions of Heaven and Hell until we understand that every moment we live and breathe is the very Heaven and Hell we are attempting to unravel?

Your creation (and accompanying words) are many textured and layered. The latter detail images of your piece evokes the toil Mr Rodin put into his The Gates of Hell. But, before this, in the earlier detail images, I saw horses (Jonathan Swift, Gulliver’s Travels came to mind), then a troupe of monks (pilgrims), a mermaid (we are mostly water), then a seated figure with the weight of the world upon his knees (a book) who I at first thought was Le Penseur, and maybe he is…

But, for me, Le Penseur was revealed as a subtle figure to the left of the spiral. She is wearing robes; and is ready to cast her fabricated cloth from skin so that she may think freely. To become. Funny, you don’t see her on the main, full pics of the creation, only in the details.

I can see why this piece is a crown jewel. Absorbing.

    • You know , Ford, that I don’t go like ” come see what I made” and definitely not when I am commenting at someone’s creations.
But the underlying attraction between your Rodin post/creations and Inferno was too strong to overlook.

I had no doubt of the journey you would have with this one…so many things; some easy to spot, more waiting to be discovered in the details.
To this day, I still find things that have escaped me…and I made it😆

      Thank you, mate.
      Big hug. 🍻

      • Probably that’s one of the greatest joys in creating… when you study again something time after, and see brand new things in there! Or, a new link opens to something else that you would never have imagined at the time of creating. Here, perhaps, we are creating almost a ‘living’ art.
        🍻
